Please explain about the techniques of preparing the Ensilage called “Pickle Grass”and its types. “As the famous say goes only in times of oppressive heat the prominence of shade would be felt’’. We have experienced this in our own lives. We have imparted training on the techniques of preparing the pickle grass in several villages belonging to the district of Trichirappalli. A good number of farmers have got benefited by this initiative. The former Dean of the Trichy College of Agriculture and a senior scientist Mr. Rajakannu taught these techniques through a demonstration. And I am so happy to share the same with you. Keep the harvested hi breed grass K -3 and K4 released by the Tamilnadu Agricultural University in open air in the same field where it was harvested for about two hours. After this tie the grass in to small bundles. Dig a deep pit ,spread plastic sheet inside the pit and stack the bundles of grass uniformly. Stamp on the bundles firmly to remove the air in them. Thereafter, spray the raw(crystal) salt in the ratio of 4 kiograms per ton of grass. On this spray the solution containing 10 litres of water and 2 Kilos of jiggery( unrefined sugar).The quantity of the preservative materials of salt and the country sugar (jaggery) solution should vary according to the quantum of the grass to be preserved. Once the first layer of grass is done with, stack the next layer of bundles and remove the air content in them by stamping on the grass and spray the salt and the jaggery solution. You can stack the grass bundles in layers to the brim of the pit. Thereafter spread plastic sheet on the same and pile up soil on it in the shape of pyramid. This is to prevent the rain water from seeping in to the pit. There should also be no penetration of water or air in to the pit. The pit should remain closed for a minimum of three months. After this period we can remove the heap of soil and the plastic sheet and feed the cattle with this ensilage in adequate quantities. Everyday after taking out the required quantities of ensilage, the rest should be kept covered with the plastic sheet. Soil need not be heaped on the same. During the rainy season 20 days, before the cultivation of K3 and the K4 grass, the sowing of maize, for fodder should be done in a separate piece of land with an area 15cents. (Then only simultaneous harvesting can be done for the use of preparation of the ensilage). If ¾ ton of organic manure is sprayed before sowing of 8 kilos of seeds, on the 60th day harvesting can be done. Cultivating the crop just once in a year will be sufficient during the lean seasons. Similarly, the cultivation of either K3 or K4 can be done in an area of just 5 cent. And if these two crops are harvested and processed the way it is mentioned above it will fulfil the needs of fodder for a set of cattle and goats consisting of a cow and a herd of five goats. Every cow should be fed with 20 Kilos and a goat with 3 kilos of green fodder every day. These fodder grass varieties shall grow well from the month of July to February. During this period of eight months there would be no scarcity for green fodder. Bt the period of March to June will be very dry and scarcity of green fodder will be very high. And during this time the ensilage mentioned above will come in handy to fulfil the needs of green fodder. Further it should be noted that only from the grass varieties of millet, and maize the ensilage can be prepared and not from some common grass varieties. Evening study centre started at Paithamparai Village in Trichy District, with Support of Tata Power Community Development Trust (TPCDT). Supporting children home works and ensuring quality education among rural children. we mainly concentrate on science, mathamatics and english for the children who are going to appear in the public examination. We accept admission from 6th std to twelfth standard. If the center is not functioning,they would not have been able to pay fees for extra tuition to help them in their home work. An it is mainly difficult for the children who are going to appear for the of 10th and 12 std examination. Thanks to Tata Community Development Trust and we expect more support to start extra study centres, where students are in need.
